Due to our commitment to delivering the highest-performing sites on the web, all of the images we host use Google's WebP format. We convert all GIF, JPEG, and PNG images to Google's next-generation image format, too.
According to Google, WebP lossless images are 26% smaller in size compared to PNGs. WebP lossy images are also 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEG images. For more information on the new format, click here .

In these results, the only penalties that result are from the logo, ads, and Amazon assets embedded in the article. By using WebP, we're able to shave valuable seconds off of the load time.
